Dataset Owner Onboarding Questions
Purpose
The purpose of this document is to devise a set of questions that will serve as a guide to questions posed to new data source owners so that we can understand where they are in the data management maturity spectrum in addition to determining which initial integration approach will work best to onboard their datasets.
Questions
Describe the size of your organization/ agency, different divisions, who may have water-related data, and the basic IT support available internally. If different divisions, list them and questions below would likely need to be addressed at each division.
Who would be the point of contact who understands what the data means and represents?
Who is the point of contact for IT administration questions and issues (i.e. server access)?
Who is the point of contact who understands the database structure or data management practices?
Do you have anyone on your team or in your agency who is familiar with coding, and in what language? Python? Java? Do you work with them regularly to support the data system?
Who is a good point of contact who can periodically upload data to CKAN?
How much data do you have? How many records, how many files (size in MB)?
How often are your datasets generated, updated, published, etc?
How are data collected and ingested into your data system (i.e. field data, human data entry, scan and OCR, appended/ attached)
Can your datasets be accessed from the internet? Where (internet address)? How (i.e. protocol (ftp, http(s), Box?). Please look over and review data with us on screen.
Describe the different water-related data fields - are there metadata to inform us on the meaning of these fields? Who is responsible for entering metadata?
Does it require authentication to access some or all of the data fields?
What format is the data in (json, csv, xml, xlsx etc…) ?
Do you have time-series data?
Do you have data tied to specific locations?
What is the location format, UTM, lat/lon, geometry/geography field, etc… ?
Are you willing to put your time series data into the SensorThings data model?
If yes, would you host the ST service or would you like WDI to setup a cloud instance? If no, what are the steps or approvals that are needed to make the data uploadable? If you have an API, are you willing to convert or proxy it to the Sensor Things format? Can you provide technical help to aid in this process?
If there are any limitations that you see in this process, what would need to happen to remove or reduce them?
